Not a real outsider | Brasserie Freilager

To be honest, you would not imagine a brasserie next to an industrial area and a suburban neighborhood. But if you should ever go on a culinary trip outside of the city, you will unexpectedly find a real foodie temple in Albisrieden.

In the former storerooms of a bonded warehouse, you can now enjoy a straightforward cuisine with selected wines in a casual 70’s ambience. The Brasserie Freilager offers a small but fine menu with culinary delights made of regional and local products. In addition to classic brasserie dishes such as beef tatar or Café de Paris, by the way with exclusive beef from the farm “Ojo de Agua” of Dieter Meier, heartier dishes like Swiss veal tenderloin or braised lamb shanks can also be found on the menu. For all the meatless desires, there are homemade pasta and vegetarian/vegan alternatives available.

Our evening started with the beef tatar "Ojo de Agua", which was served classically with toast bread and a creative appetizer called “Marktgasse Glas”. It consisted of a poached egg yolk on lukewarm truffle spinach with potato foam and black truffle and was served in a big glass to spoon up. It was definitely the right choice. Both dishes were a delicious start, whereby the Marktgasse Glas pointed out what the Brasserie Freilager is capable of in culinary terms.

Of course, the main reason we went to the Brasserie Freilager was because of the meat. Not just any meat, but the tasty Argentine beef, which we could already enjoy in the restaurant Bärengasse. So, we ordered the Café de Paris for the main course, which was gratinated with a homemade butter and the plain beef fillet accompanied by sauce Béarnaise and a spicy Chimichurri. As side dishes, we chose pommes allumettes and a mascarpone risotto.

We were thrilled and have to admit, it was one of the best Café de Paris we've ever had – super tender and refined with a heavenly butter. Also worth mentioning is the mascarpone risotto, which was cooked to the point and not heavy at all, but very creamy. Très bon.

As a formidable conclusion with already full bellies, we indulged ourselves with a warm chocolate tartlet accompanied by sour cream ice cream. A great dessert to end a great evening.

The Brasserie Freilager delivers straightforward and pithy dishes and pays attention to high-quality and regional products. With a clear cuisine, selected wines and a fair pricing, the Freilager quickly becomes a culinary hotspot out of the city – duty free for sure.
